Know Your Rights Program

We aim to build community capacity, and foster community action!

Our Goal

Empowering parents is an initiative that aims to increase access to culturally-responsive information about the Canadian Justice System to diverse and multicultural communities.

EMPOWERING PARENTS

Empowering parents is an initiative that aims to increase access to culturally-responsive information about the Canadian Justice System to diverse and multicultural communities. The change in title from Criminal Justice System: What Parents Should Know to Know Your Rights: Empowering parents aims at reducing stigma and cultural incompatibility to engage families. Language proficiency is a major barrier for intended communities who are reluctant to engage in workshops that use specific terminologies such as ‘’criminal’’. By presenting a culturally tailored title, the ability to convey intended meaning and knowledge will be accessible to more individuals.

IMPACT OF EVIDENCE BASED APPROACH

The basis of these workshops will be strengths-based in practice using culturally-responsive strategies to address the needs of the targeted population. The evidence-based approach highlights the strengths of individuals, families and communities by providing resources and accessible information about the Criminal Justice System.

Central to a strength-based approach is rooted in the idea that people and environments interact and change each other in the process. Parents will be able to engage and learn about the Criminal Justice System and their roles and responsibilities under Canadian law. This will allow them to recognize breaches of YCJA and direct themselves to appropriate resources to support their children in conflicts with the system, while also being equipped to advocate effectively for themselves.
